Christmas day, 2011 |
Song Guo, age 7 |
Hi there! We're the Whickers! Our fabulous fam is made up of me and my best friend, Curtis, and our 12 (soon to be 13) wonderful kids. We have four birth children, 3 from China, 3 from Haiti, 2 from Ethiopia, and 1 on the way from an Asian country we can't disclose at the moment. Our daughter-to-be's name is Song Guo, so if you're up on your Asian languages, her name should be a pretty big clue. ;o)
Sharing our home is a delightful corgi named Poppy, a temperamental cat named Fran, and an adorable chinchilla named Sticky.
We run a vegan household, although our older kids exercise their right to choose when they're away from home. Curtis and I are strict vegans, as is Maizie (at her own choosing). We allow our little guys to eat dairy and eggs when they're away from home, but because everyone eats breakfast and dinner at home, and I prepare all their school lunches, this doesn't amount to much. We decided we didn't want our kids to have to feel excluded at school when someone brings birthday cupcakes or there's a "bringing up grades" pizza party. We've found that this isn't good enough for some vegans, and some omnivores think it's too restrictive. It works for us, though, and that's all that matters.
We're on year three of a never-ending kitchen remodel. It's a long story, and it's been a real trial, but slowly it's getting done and it will be beautiful once it is. For now, picture it: beaded inset white cabinets, soapstone, marble, 2x6 handmade subway tiles, polished nickel hardware, honed black slate floor, floor-to-ceiling pantry with baking center, 2 dishwashers, huge island, custom windows... Ahhhh....
We are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We are Christians. We believe Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. We are not automatically voting for Romney. ;o) Our oldest son will be leaving this year to serve a two-year mission for our church. Please be kind to him when he knocks on your door, and remember he's somebody's treasured son.
